How to Solve a Problem like Cufón

Recently, I got involved in a twitter discussion (@mildfuzz) regarding using cufón with commercial typefaces. Cufón, for those who don’t know, is a system for using none websafe fonts in web pages where using images as a work around is not appropriate (i.e. dynamic content).

The problem is that Cufón creates little files containing references to the font, which can be used on any web page. This means that anyone could, at least in theory, steal fonts from your innocent website, bypass the resellers and use them on their own creations. This would be against the terms of distribution set by the foundry and would short change the industry.

Now, this will not be a lengthy article. I am coming to the point.

This is a call to arms for the industry. Why not use a system like Cufón but coming straight from the source? When purchasing fonts from a foundry, would it not be possible for the foundry to have Cufón files (or something similar) hosted on their own servers, which you can pay for the privilege to have your own domains whitelisted for access in order to use the font in your design?

This could be a huge revenue stream for the foundries, and thus typographers and give designers the freedom of type.

Let me know what you think.
